When to Visit
Rishikesh is best September–November and February–April. The monsoon (July–August) is beautiful but river activity stops and some roads flood. May–June is hot but manageable. The coldest months (December–January) are serene and quiet, ideal for serious yoga retreats.

Experiences
The best experiences in Rishikesh — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
Every evening at sunset, hundreds gather on the ghats at Parmarth Niketan for the Ganga aarti — priests in saffron robes performing fire rituals on the river while bells ring, conches blow, and diyas float downstream. One of the most moving ceremonial experiences in India.
The stretch from Shivpuri to Laxman Jhula (16km) offers Grade 3–4 rapids — "The Wall", "Three Blind Mice", "Golf Course" — with Himalayan scenery throughout. Budget operators from ₹600; quality operators with safety equipment from ₹1,200.
In 1968, the Beatles came here for four months to study Transcendental Meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi — the retreat produced much of The White Album. Now a partially overgrown ruin covered in street art, it has a strange melancholy beauty unlike anywhere else in India.
Rishikesh has India's highest concentration of legitimate yoga schools — from one-day drop-in classes (₹300–800) to 200-hour teacher training programs (4 weeks). The Sivananda Yoga Ashram, Omkarananda Ganga Sadan, and Yoga Niketan are among the most respected traditional schools.
At 83m, India's highest fixed bungee jump overlooks a Himalayan gorge — operated by Jumpin Heights (₹3,550), it's well-run and internationally certified. The same complex offers a giant swing (82m arc over a river gorge) and flying fox.
A 45-minute trek from the roadhead to the Kunjapuri Devi temple (1,676m) for sunrise — on clear mornings from October to March the entire Himalayan chain is visible: Gangotri, Kedarnath, Bandarpunch, and Chaukhamba, turning pink in the first light.

Accommodation
Pick your area first — each neighbourhood has a completely different price point and vibe.
Laxman Jhula
Bohemian & Lively
The most traveller-friendly area — the iconic suspension bridge, the 13-storey Shri Trayambakeshwar temple, riverside cafes serving banana pancakes and masala chai, tattoo shops, and yoga studios mixed in with genuine sadhus and pilgrims. The backpacker heart of Rishikesh.
Ram Jhula & Swarg Ashram
Peaceful & Devotional
The spiritual core of Rishikesh — Parmarth Niketan (India's largest ashram, 1,000 rooms), the Sivananda Ashram, and the famous Ganga aarti ceremony all cluster around Ram Jhula. Less touristic than Laxman Jhula, more genuinely devotional.
Tapovan & Shivpuri
Wild & Outdoorsy
The adventure base north of Rishikesh — riverside camps, white-water rafting companies, bungee and flying fox at Mohanchatti, and the quietest beach camping on the Ganga. Accommodation runs from tent camps to luxury riverside cottages.

A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.

Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Laxman Jhula bridge & temples early in the day before crowds build.
Pair Gita Bhavan ashram with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
