When to Visit
Manali has three very distinct seasons. Spring–summer (Mar–Jun) is the most pleasant for sightseeing. Monsoon (Jul–Aug) brings landslides and road closures — avoid unless specifically trekking. Winter (Oct–Mar) brings heavy snow — Rohtang closes but Solang Valley skiing is excellent.

Experiences
The best experiences in Manali — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
Drive to 3,978m for year-round snow — the pass divides Kullu Valley from Lahaul and commands views of glaciers and peaks most visitors never reach on foot. Permits required (booked online the day before) and closed November–May for most vehicles.
A 16th-century wooden pagoda temple in a cedar forest — one of the most beautifully situated temples in the Himalayas, dedicated to the wife of Bhima from the Mahabharata. The surrounding forest is peaceful and perfect for morning walks.
Depending on season: skiing and snowboarding in winter (Dec–Mar), paragliding and zorbing in spring, and camping with Himalayan views in summer. The ropeway runs year-round to a snow point.
Grade II–III rafting through the Kullu Valley on the Beas River — 14km stretches between Pirdi and Jhiri are the standard run, with rapids named Crossfire and Rollercoaster. Best March–June before monsoon.
A 4-day high-altitude trek crossing from the lush Kullu Valley to the stark moonscape of Spiti — one of Himalayan trekking's most dramatic landscape contrasts. Altitude reaches 4,270m. Operated by multiple trek companies from Manali.
Old Manali's lane of rooftop cafes with Himalayan views, apple pancakes, and momos (Tibetan dumplings) is the social heart of the valley. Dylan's Toasted & Roasted and The Lazy Dog are institutions.

Accommodation
Pick your area first — each neighbourhood has a completely different price point and vibe.
Old Manali
Bohemian & Charming
The hippie-turn-charming original village above the main road — a single pedestrian lane lined with apple trees, rooftop cafes, wooden Himachali houses, the ancient Manu Temple, and the cedar-forest Hadimba Devi Temple complex. Where backpackers and young couples base themselves.
Solang Valley
Adventure & Scenic
A flat alpine meadow 14km north of Manali at 2,480m — the hub of all snow and adventure activities. In winter it's a ski resort; in summer a paragliding and camping destination. The ropeway runs year-round.
Mall Road & New Manali
Commercial & Convenient
The main town strip with hotels, restaurants, and shops — the most convenient base for Rohtang day trips and Solang Valley. Busy in summer with North Indian domestic tourists, more commercial and less atmospheric than Old Manali but with better hotel quality.

Dining
From street food to fine dining — the dishes you must try and the restaurants locals actually go to.
Start with simple local restaurants around Old Manali; the best meals are usually regional staples rather than generic tourist menus.
A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.
Transport
Base yourself near Old Manali if you only have 1-2 days.
Use autos or app cabs for short hops where available; agree prices before starting if rides are not metered.
Hire a local driver for spread-out sights or day trips.
Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Manu Temple (oldest in valley) early in the day before crowds build.
Pair Café culture & rooftop restaurants with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
