Star and Key of the Indian Ocean
Lagoons of luminous turquoise ringed by coral reefs, Creole cooking perfumed with saffron and tamarind, colonial-era sugar estates in the hills, and an underwater waterfall illusion that looks impossible — Mauritius is the Indian Ocean at its most seductive.

When to Visit
Mauritius has a tropical climate moderated by the southeast trade winds. The dry, cool season (May–December) is significantly better than the wet cyclone season (January–April). November–December has the best combination of dry weather and pre-cyclone calm.

Experiences
The best experiences in Mauritius — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
A sandbar island in the Flacq lagoon accessible by boat from the east coast — the clearest water in Mauritius, parasailing, water slides, and beach BBQ lunches. The quintessential Mauritius day trip, best booked through your hotel for a private boat.
A submarine sand and silt flow off Le Morne creates the illusion of an underwater waterfall when viewed from above — a helicopter flight over the peninsula and lagoon is the only way to see it properly and is genuinely extraordinary.
A geological anomaly in the Black River district — seven naturally occurring colours of volcanic soil that don't mix despite rain and erosion. Combined with the nearby Chamarel Waterfall (100m drop) and rum distillery, it makes for a perfect inland half-day.
Mauritius has one of the Indian Ocean's healthiest coral reef systems. Flic-en-Flac's Cathedral Cave dive site, Blue Bay Marine Park's snorkelling, and the whale shark dives off the west coast (Jun–Nov) are world-class. Most dive centres are PADI certified.
The island's only national park covers 6,500 hectares of endemic forest — the Mauritian flying fox, Mauritius kestrel, and pink pigeon are found here. Several hiking trails from 1km to 12km with viewpoints over the gorge and waterfall.
The 1844 covered market sells saffron, vanilla, pickles, and Creole spices alongside handcrafted textiles and model ships. The adjacent Caudan Waterfront has restaurants, galleries, and the Blue Penny Museum with Mauritius's famous 1847 stamps.

Accommodation
Pick your area first — each neighbourhood has a completely different price point and vibe.
Grand Baie
Lively & Accessible
Mauritius's most developed resort town on the north coast — a lively strip of shops, watersports operators, restaurants, and the island's most accessible nightlife. The beach itself is good but not the island's best; Grand Baie's value is as an activity and dining hub.
Flic-en-Flac & West Coast
Relaxed & Beautiful
The best combination of beach quality and real village life on the island — a 4km stretch of white sand, the Cathedral Cave dive site (one of the Indian Ocean's finest), and the Le Morne peninsula 20 minutes south with its UNESCO mountain and kitesurfing lagoon.
East Coast & Belle Mare
Exclusive & Serene
The island's most exclusive resort strip — Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce have the clearest lagoon water in Mauritius (calm year-round), Île aux Cerfs island just offshore, and the highest concentration of 5-star properties. Also the entry point for Blue Bay Marine Park's snorkelling on the south coast.

Dining
From street food to fine dining — the dishes you must try and the restaurants locals actually go to.
Start with simple local restaurants around Grand Baie; the best meals are usually regional staples rather than generic tourist menus.
A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.
Transport
Base yourself near Grand Baie if you only have 1-2 days.
Use autos or app cabs for short hops where available; agree prices before starting if rides are not metered.
Hire a local driver for spread-out sights or day trips.
Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Grand Baie public beach early in the day before crowds build.
Pair Caudan Waterfront area with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
