Spice Island of the Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean's most evocative island — Stone Town's UNESCO-listed labyrinth of Arab palaces, Swahili houses, and Persian baths, white beaches that run 10km without a building, and spice plantations that once made this the vanilla and cloves capital of the world.

When to Visit
Zanzibar has two dry seasons: June–October (long rains have passed, temperatures 24–28°C, best all-round) and December–February (short rains over, warm and sunny, peak season). The two monsoon periods — March–May (heavy) and October–November (lighter) — bring lower prices but real rain. North-coast beaches (Nungwi) are swimmable year-round.

Experiences
The best experiences in Zanzibar — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed old capital is best explored without a map — its 1,000+ interlocking streets of Arab merchant houses, Indian traders' balconies, Persian bathhouses, and Omani palaces were not designed to be navigated. Get deliberately lost, follow the smell of spices and grilling seafood, and emerge at Forodhani Market for sunset.
Every evening from 6pm, the seafront gardens fill with charcoal grills — Zanzibar pizza (thin stuffed dough cooked on a pan), octopus kebabs, sugarcane juice, Urojo soup (Zanzibar mix), and the freshest lobster for $5–8. The best cheap food experience in East Africa.
A traditional wooden dhow sailing the Indian Ocean at sunset from Nungwi — drinks, dolphins, and the island silhouetted against an orange and pink sky. This is the singular Zanzibar image. Most beach hotels arrange shared cruises for $15–30; private charters from $80.
Zanzibar once produced 90% of the world's cloves — the "Spice Island" tour visits a working plantation where guides identify 20+ spices by smell and taste: vanilla, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, lemongrass, and the clove trees that built the Sultan's fortune.
A 20-minute boat ride from Stone Town to Prison Island (Changuu Island) — originally a holding pen for slaves, now home to a colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, some 150+ years old. You can hand-feed them and walk among them freely.
Zanzibar's only national park protects the last population of the Zanzibar red colobus monkey — an endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. The forest walk takes 90 minutes; the monkeys are habituated and approach very close, particularly in the late afternoon.

Accommodation
Pick your area first — each neighbourhood has a completely different price point and vibe.
Stone Town
Ancient & Vibrant
Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed capital and its cultural soul — the Arab merchant houses with their massive carved wooden doors, Persian bathhouses, Omani sultans' palaces, Indian traders' ornate balconies, and the Forodhani seafront. One of the most intact historic Islamic trading cities in the world, and still entirely alive.
Nungwi (North)
Lively & Beautiful
The most popular beach destination — a white-sand bay where the Indian Ocean is swimmable even at low tide (unlike the east coast), with a genuine fishing village, sea turtle sanctuary, and the dhow-building workshops where craftsmen still make traditional wooden boats by hand.
Paje (Southeast)
Laid-back & Windswept
The quieter, more local alternative to Nungwi — the east coast village famous for kitesurfing (consistent 15–25 knot winds June–September), tidal rock pools that extend 500m at low tide, and the most atmospheric backpacker scene on the island with reggae bars and beach bonfires.

Dining
From street food to fine dining — the dishes you must try and the restaurants locals actually go to.
Start with simple local restaurants around Stone Town; the best meals are usually regional staples rather than generic tourist menus.
A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.
Transport
Base yourself near Stone Town if you only have 1-2 days.
Use autos or app cabs for short hops where available; agree prices before starting if rides are not metered.
Hire a local driver for spread-out sights or day trips.
Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Forodhani Night Food Market early in the day before crowds build.
Pair Freddie Mercury's birthplace (1946) with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
