Ladakh Travel Guide 2025: How to Plan the Perfect Trip

Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, ancient monasteries and the world's highest motorable roads. Everything you need to plan a Ladakh trip — permits, acclimatisation, budget and best routes.

Ladakh is India's most extreme and extraordinary destination. A high-altitude cold desert at 3,500 metres, bordered by the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges, with a Buddhist monastery culture that feels closer to Tibet than to Delhi. Planning a Ladakh trip requires more preparation than any other Indian destination — altitude sickness, permit requirements, limited connectivity, and a short access window from June to September.

⚠️

CRITICAL: Acclimatise properly. Every year tourists rush to Ladakh, skip rest days, and end up hospitalised with altitude sickness. Spend at least 2 full days in Leh before any high-altitude excursions. No alcohol. Drink 3–4 litres of water per day.

How to Get to Ladakh

  • By air: Direct flights from Delhi (1hr), Mumbai (2.5hrs), and Srinagar (30min) to Leh Kushok Bakula Airport. The cheapest and safest option for acclimatisation.
  • Manali–Leh Highway (475km, 2 days): Opens mid-May. The legendary mountain road via Rohtang Pass, Baralacha La, and Tanglang La. Usually done as a 2-day jeep drive with a night at Sarchu or Pang.
  • Srinagar–Leh Highway (424km, 1 day): Opens earlier (April). Via Zoji La and Kargil. Passes through the historic Silk Route.

Permits Required for Ladakh

  • Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required for Indian citizens visiting Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Tso Moriri. Apply at DC Office Leh or online.
  • Protected Area Permit (PAP): Foreign nationals need this for Nubra, Pangong, and other restricted areas. Apply at Deputy Commissioner's office in Leh with passport.
  • Environmental Fee: ₹400 per person for various protected areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Ladakh?

By air: Leh Kushok Bakula Airport has direct flights from Delhi (1 hr), Mumbai (2.5 hrs), and Srinagar. By road: The Manali–Leh Highway (479 km, ~2 days) is open June–October. The Srinagar–Leh Highway is also seasonal. Most visitors fly in and acclimatise for 2 days before exploring.

Is altitude sickness a serious risk in Ladakh?

Yes. Leh sits at 3,524m and high passes like Khardung La (5,359m) are significantly higher. Rest completely on your first 2 days in Leh, drink 3–4 litres of water daily, avoid alcohol, and don't exert yourself. Diamox (acetazolamide) can help — consult a doctor before travel. If symptoms worsen, descend immediately.

What permits are required for Ladakh?

Indian nationals do not need a permit for Leh town or main areas. Inner Line Permits (ILP) are required for Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, Tso Moriri, and Dah-Hanu. ILPs are obtained at the DC Office in Leh (same day, ₹200–400). Foreign nationals need additional permits.

What is the best time to visit Ladakh?

June to September is peak season — roads are open, weather is pleasant (15–25°C days), and Pangong Lake is accessible. July–August is busiest. May and October are shoulder months with fewer crowds but colder nights. Ladakh in winter (December–February) is remote and extreme but increasingly popular for the Chadar frozen river trek.
