Queen of the Arabian Sea
Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against a blazing sunset, a Jewish synagogue in a spice-scented alley, Dutch colonial mansions turned heritage hotels, and a Kerala houseboat drifting through backwater canals lined with coconut palms.

When to Visit
Kochi and Kerala follow the southwest monsoon calendar. October–February is the prime season — cool, dry, and vibrant. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale (Dec–Apr, biennial) transforms Fort Kochi into India's greatest contemporary art event. Monsoon (Jun–Sep) is lush but heavy.

Experiences
The best experiences in Kochi — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
The cantilevered Chinese fishing nets on the tip of Fort Kochi — introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan in 1400 AD — are Kerala's most photographed image. Buy the catch directly from the fishermen and have it grilled at an adjacent stall.
An overnight stay on a converted rice barge (kettuvallam) drifting through the Alleppey backwater network — meals cooked on board, kingfishers diving from the banks, and village life visible from the water. The defining Kerala experience.
Kerala's classical dance-drama with elaborate face paint applied over 4 hours — the performance itself lasts 45–90 minutes and tells stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The make-up application is itself a spectacle worth watching.
The Dutch Palace (built by the Portuguese, modified by the Dutch) has the finest Kerala mural paintings in existence — Ramayana scenes in vivid colour. The adjacent Paradesi Synagogue (1568) is one of the oldest active synagogues in the world.
A 4hr drive from Kochi to Munnar — rolling hills carpeted in tea from horizon to horizon at 1,600m altitude, the Eravikulam National Park protecting the endangered Nilgiri tahr, and mist over the Anamalai Hills at dawn. Best as a 2-day trip.
Learn to cook a full Kerala sadya (feast) with a local family — coconut fish curry, avial, thoran, and payasam served on banana leaf. Combine with a visit to a spice garden to see cardamom, pepper, vanilla, and nutmeg growing on the same hillside.

Accommodation
Pick your area first — each neighbourhood has a completely different price point and vibe.
Fort Kochi
Heritage & Artistic
The historic peninsula where Kerala's colonial story is most concentrated — Chinese fishing nets, Portuguese-era St Francis Church, Dutch colonial houses, a flourishing contemporary art scene, and the best restaurants in Kochi. Small enough to explore entirely on foot.
Mattancherry
Historic & Aromatic
Adjacent to Fort Kochi — the spice-trading heart of medieval Kochi, with the Dutch Palace, Paradesi Synagogue, antique shops, and the wholesale spice warehouses still trading cardamom and pepper. The Jew Town lane is one of India's great heritage streets.
Alleppey (Alappuzha)
Serene & Natural
The backwater capital 85km south of Kochi — the base for houseboat journeys through the Vembanad Lake network, the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race, and cycling through rice paddy villages. Stay overnight to experience the canals at dawn when there is no boat traffic.

Dining
From street food to fine dining — the dishes you must try and the restaurants locals actually go to.
Start with simple local restaurants around Fort Kochi; the best meals are usually regional staples rather than generic tourist menus.
A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.
Transport
Base yourself near Fort Kochi if you only have 1-2 days.
Use autos or app cabs for short hops where available; agree prices before starting if rides are not metered.
Hire a local driver for spread-out sights or day trips.
Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Chinese fishing nets at sunset early in the day before crowds build.
Pair St Francis Church (Vasco da Gama buried here) with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
