The Maldives has a reputation problem: most people think it is exclusively for honeymooners with unlimited budgets who float in $2,000-a-night overwater bungalows. That Maldives exists. But alongside it is a network of local islands — Maafushi, Dhigurah, Fulidhoo, Thoddoo — where you can stay in a guesthouse, eat at local restaurants, and access the same impossible turquoise water for $60–100 per day.
Resort Islands vs Local Islands
| Type | Price | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overwater Resort | $500–3,000/night | Ultimate luxury, private beach, all-inclusive | Extremely expensive, alcohol only at resort |
| Budget Resort | $150–350/night | Still stunning, better service | Still expensive, limited local experience |
| Local Island Guesthouse | $30–70/night | Cheap, authentic, access to local life | Bikini beach only (not whole island) |
Best Local Islands to Visit
- ›Maafushi — The most developed local island, 45 minutes by speedboat from Malé. Most guesthouses, water sports, bikini beach. Best for first-timers.
- ›Dhigurah — Famous for whale shark season (August–November). Long, uncrowded beach. More peaceful than Maafushi.
- ›Thoddoo — Agricultural island known for watermelons. Beautiful house reef, almost no tourists.
- ›Fulidhoo — Tiny, quiet, excellent diving. The definition of off-the-beaten-path Maldives.
- ›Guraidhoo — Very close to Malé (45 min ferry), excellent house reef for snorkelling.
Dhigurah offers guaranteed whale shark sightings from August to November. You can swim with 10-metre whale sharks for $30 (guided snorkelling trip). This is the best wildlife experience in the Indian Ocean.
Getting to the Maldives
- ›Fly to Malé (VIA airport). IndiGo, Air India, Indigo, SriLankan, and Emirates fly from major Indian cities. Prices from ₹12,000–25,000 return.
- ›From Malé airport to local islands: Public ferry (₹250–400, 45 min–2 hours), speedboat transfer ($30–50, faster), or domestic flight to island airports.
- ›Pro tip: Stay near the airport on arrival night to avoid expensive late-night speedboats. Airport Guesthouse or similar.
