Dubai divides travellers more than almost any destination on earth. Some find it thrillingly futuristic and impossibly glamorous. Others find it shallow, overpriced, and architecturally soulless. Both camps are partly right. The key to enjoying Dubai is knowing exactly what it is — a monument to human ambition and capital — and planning accordingly.

Dubai is expensive by Southeast Asian standards but comparable to London or New York if you stay in mid-range hotels and eat at local restaurants. The Deira area has excellent budget options and the most authentic souks. Avoid staying in the Marina or Downtown unless you have the budget to match.
