City of Relentless Energy
A city that runs on motorbikes, pho, and ambition — the commercial heart of Vietnam where war history and rooftop bars coexist, French colonial facades line streets of banh mi and iced coffee, and the Mekong Delta stretches beyond.

When to Visit
HCMC has two seasons: dry (Dec–Apr) and wet (May–Nov). The dry season is significantly more comfortable with low humidity and clear skies. The wet season brings daily afternoon downpours (usually 1–2 hours) but the city remains functional and prices drop.

Experiences
The best experiences in Ho Chi Minh City — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
The most visited museum in Vietnam — a detailed, unflinching account of the American War (Vietnam War) through photography, military hardware, and testimony. Extraordinarily powerful and essential context for understanding modern Vietnam.
75km northwest of the city — 250km of underground tunnels used by the Viet Cong during the war. Crawl through original tunnels (now widened for tourists), see booby-trap demonstrations, and fire AK-47s at the shooting range. One of Vietnam's most visceral experiences.
The 1912 colonial market is tourist-facing but the streets around it — particularly after 6pm when the night market opens — have excellent banh mi, bun bo Hue, and broken rice (com tam) at ₫30,000–60,000 per dish.
Take a speedboat south to the Mekong Delta — floating markets, coconut candy factories, sampan rides through rice paddies, and fresh seafood. My Tho (2hrs) or Can Tho (3hrs) are the main bases.
HCMC has Asia's best rooftop bar scene for the price — Chill Sky Bar (52nd floor, ₫200k cover), Shri (23rd floor), and EON Heli Bar (52nd floor Bitexco) all have extraordinary skyline views with cocktails from $5–8.
The former Presidential Palace of South Vietnam — preserved exactly as it was on April 30, 1975, when North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates. The command bunker, war room, and rooftop helipad are all accessible.

Accommodation
Pick your area first — each neighbourhood has a completely different price point and vibe.
District 1 (Ben Thanh area)
Energetic & Urban
The tourist and commercial core of HCMC — French colonial landmarks, the War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, Ben Thanh Market, and the city's rooftop bar scene. Noisy, fast-paced, and unmissable for first-timers.
District 3 & Tan Dinh
Local & Charming
The city's most liveable neighbourhood for visitors — quieter than District 1, dotted with French villa cafes, the photogenic pink Tan Dinh Church, excellent local pho restaurants, and a growing specialty coffee scene. Where locals eat and where long-stay visitors prefer to base themselves.
Cholon (District 5)
Cultural & Authentic
Ho Chi Minh City's Chinatown — established in the 18th century and still one of Asia's most vibrant ethnic Chinese districts. The Thien Hau Temple with its coil-hung incense, the wholesale Binh Tay Market, and lanes of traditional medicine shops and herb sellers.

Dining
From street food to fine dining — the dishes you must try and the restaurants locals actually go to.
Start with simple local restaurants around District 1 (Ben Thanh); the best meals are usually regional staples rather than generic tourist menus.
A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.
Transport
Base yourself near District 1 (Ben Thanh) if you only have 1-2 days.
Use autos or app cabs for short hops where available; agree prices before starting if rides are not metered.
Hire a local driver for spread-out sights or day trips.
Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Ben Thanh Market early in the day before crowds build.
Pair Notre-Dame Cathedral (1880) with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
