Day 4 — Drive to Kazbegi, Gergeti Trinity Church
Morning: Private car from Tbilisi (₹2,200–2,800 one way, book through hotel). 3-hour drive on the Georgian Military Highway — the route passes Ananuri Castle (16th-century fortress above a reservoir, worth a 30-min stop), the tunnel at Gudauri ski resort, and into the High Caucasus at Kazbegi (Stepantsminda, 1,740m).
Afternoon: Hike to Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170m) — 2-hour round-trip hike from the village, steep but paved for the final section. Standing at the 14th-century church with Mt Kazbegi (5,047m) behind and the Terek River gorge below is the single finest viewpoint in the Caucasus. Alternatively, hire a 4WD to drive up (₹900).
Evening: Dinner and overnight at a Kazbegi guesthouse (₹1,800–3,200 per night, typically includes breakfast and dinner). Mountain trout, fresh bread from the tonir clay oven, locally produced honey. At this altitude the night sky is extraordinary.
Stay recommendation: Rooms Hotel Kazbegi (₹6,000–9,000/night, infinity pool facing Mt Kazbegi) for a luxury experience. For budget: Guesthouse Nino (₹1,800–2,200 including meals). Both book up — reserve 1–2 months ahead.
Day 5 — Kazbegi Hikes & Return to Tbilisi
Morning: Wake at 6am for dawn over Kazbegi — the mountain turns pink with first light. Shorter hike to Arsha village or along the Terek River valley. Visit the local market for churchkhela (walnut grape candy, ₹60–150) and local honey.
Afternoon: Drive back to Tbilisi (3 hrs), stopping at Gudauri viewpoint for one last mountain panorama. Afternoon free for Tbilisi souvenirs and shopping — Georgian enamel cloisonné jewellery, natural wine from a bottle shop, silk and velvet in Marjanishvili area.
Day 6: Kakheti — Wine & Sighnaghi
Day 6 — Kakheti Wine Valley Day Trip
Morning: Drive 2 hrs east to Alazani Valley — Georgia's premier wine region, home to the original 8,000-year-old qvevri wine tradition. Visit Bodbe Monastery (9th century, burial of St Nino), the town of Telavi (wine capital of Kakheti), and a family-run winery for a cellar tour with 6-wine tasting (₹1,200–2,000).
Afternoon: Sighnaghi — "the City of Love", a walled hilltop town with terracotta-roofed houses, views over the entire Alazani Valley to the Caucasus mountains on the horizon. Wine bar hopping along Sighnaghi's small but exceptional wine bar street. Pheasant's Tears natural wine is not to be missed.
Evening: Return to Tbilisi for final night. Optional: farewell khinkali dinner at Zakhar Zakharich restaurant — the best traditional restaurant in Tbilisi.
Day 7: Kutaisi Cave System & Departure (Optional Extension)
Day 7 — Kutaisi or Departure
Option A (if departing from Kutaisi Airport — often cheaper): Drive 3 hrs west to Kutaisi. Prometheus Cave (₹660, guided 1.5hr boat tour through illuminated stalactite chambers — one of Europe's most spectacular cave systems). Gelati Monastery (12th century, UNESCO, fresco-covered walls). Fly home from Kutaisi International Airport (Wizz Air flies Kutaisi–various European hubs).
Option B (departing Tbilisi): Final morning at leisure. Tbilisi airport is 20 min from city (taxi ₹450). Browse Rustaveli Avenue one last time, buy wine from Goodwill supermarket (far cheaper than airport shops), and take an afternoon or evening flight home.
Budget tip: Kutaisi Airport has cheaper flights to India (via Wizz Air to Budapest + IndiGo connecting, or direct charters). Check both TBS and KUT airports when booking to save ₹5,000–12,000 on flights.
